Odonata and the Psychology of Space
Odonata and the Psychology of Space
Oil on Canvas
Odonata the top painting 24" X 84" Framed
The Psychology of Space bottom painting 31" X 84" Framed
1984-2021
A two canvas diptych. Odonata, the top canvas, painted with oil paint was completed in 1984. This work was always planned to be a two panel scene as it appears today. The bottom canvas The Psychology of Space has an acrylic underpainting with oil overpainting in areas and details such as sky, clouds, and trees. Oil was used to bring consistency to the two panels.
This surrealist fantasy art was designed to challenge our ingrained perceptions of spatial relationships and the laws of nature. Surrealism became an interest of mine in my youth. I often admired the work of Salvador Dali and the art of English artist Roger Dean. I began admiring Roger Dean’s work in the seventies on posters and album covers.
The title, Odonata, references an order of predatory insects that are comprised of dragonflies and damselflies. The largest dragonfly Meganeura lived approximately 300 million years ago. The Meganeura had a wingspan of up to 28 in. and a similar appearance to modern dragonflies. The dragonflies in the paintings have a wingspan of 23 in.
Swimming above the water in the bottom canvas, The Psychology of Space, are six very large rainbow trout. Fish are a common theme in surrealist art work, made otherworldly in this work by the school swimming above the undisturbed water.
The panels work together to create one scene finally realized to completion after 37 years.
