This sculpture asks the question about giving “Human”rights to Artificial Intelligence, commonly referred to as AI. The question is at what point in modern society when AI achieves what is known as “self awareness” will AI Robots be given human rights and consideration under the law as every other citizen? “Machina” is the Latin term for machine, the pronunciation and connotation in modern society give the word “Machina” a feminine feel. I chose to make the robot female instead of male because I believe people have more empathy towards a female image instead of male due to identities represented in art though time. Women are generally characterized as softer and caring where men are creatures of war and strength.
To help people relate with the sculpture I wanted to create a more human look and refrained from using the robotic look of a bolted jaw and a mechanical looking head. So I tried to get a softer look, reminiscent of a female Greek statue. Her face has been hammered out of a 1/16” thick flat sheet of aluminum. There were a number of separate pieces shaped and welded, then the welds are ground smooth and polished to achieve this soft look. Her nose and eyebrows were welded on as separate pieces. The eyebrows were welded on from behind the face through drilled holes so the welds would be seamless. For example, the nose is made of 6 pieces welded together. Order of assembly of this sculpture was critical in an effort to hide the welding.
Machina is attached to an open Star Shaped base painted white; the star base raises her up about 3.5 inches. The base is made of Steel and she has a partial steel internal skeleton up to her waist to help support her entirely aluminum outer body; although the body is very robust made mostly out of 1/8” thick aluminum. Her thighs, calves, head are 1/16” thick aluminum, easier to shape. All of the joint hinge bolts are stainless steel she will not rust. Machina is in a "fixed" stationary pose and will not move from this position.
Machina is also wearing a headphone tiara to resemble this generations strong connection and love for technology. In the future it is feasible to believe AI will be able to have true emotion and supports the question of the piece, could AI be given human rights?
